How the Alpha Universe board is built

The board ranks every draft-relevant college quarterback, running back, receiver and tight end on one list — and it does it with data, not vibes.

Here's the honest version of how it works, what makes it trustworthy, and — just as important — what it still can't do. No black box. Read the whole thing before you argue with a rank.

The one idea: judge a player by players who looked like him

There's no magic formula here that says "this many yards is worth this much." For every prospect, the model asks one question: which historical college players most resembled this guy at the same stage of his career — and what did those players actually become in the NFL?

It finds his closest historical comparables, then averages what those real careers turned into. That average is his starting score. Real outcomes, every time — never a made-up projection.

"Resembled him" is measured on three things: how highly recruited he was, how much he produced in college relative to his peers (adjusted for age and level of competition), and how far out of high school he is — because younger production is worth more than a late breakout. That's it for the comp match. Not body type, not route tree, not combine testing, not film grades. Just the three things the data can actually stand behind.

Look — the truth about comps is that most of them bust. More than half the time, the large majority of a player's comparables went on to produce next to nothing in the NFL. That's not a flaw in the method; that's what projecting teenagers actually looks like. So the board shows you the full spread of those outcomes — the hits and the misses together — and never a single tidy number dressed up as a forecast, and never a fake "confidence interval" that hides how wide the range really is.

Production is king

The core belief this whole model is built on: age-adjusted production and efficiency win, and recruiting pedigree should matter less the more a player has actually played.

Comps alone can quietly break that rule. A lightly-recruited grinder can get dragged up by comparables who were also lightly recruited but happened to hit. A five-star who hasn't done much yet can get flattered by the pedigree of his comps. So the model steps in: when a player's comp-driven score runs ahead of what his own on-field production justifies, it gets pulled back toward what he's actually done.

Producers keep their scores. Guys riding their recruiting ranking or a flattering comp set get trimmed. This single mechanism is the most important thing separating this board from a rankings list that just launders recruiting stars into fantasy value.

One list, across positions

Running backs score more fantasy points per game than receivers, and receivers more than most tight ends. Rank everyone on raw projected points and you'd bury an entire position every year. So instead, each player is scored as a share of the best players ever at his own position. The all-time greats at each spot set the ceiling; everyone else is a fraction of it.

Two things fall out of that, both on purpose. Positions become comparable on one list. And class strength survives — a weak tight-end class reads weak, because its best player only gets partway to the historical bar. A strong class reads strong.

What the Alpha Rating is — and isn't

The Alpha Rating is a relative currency, not a points projection. It tells you how players stack up against each other. It does not forecast how many fantasy points anyone will score. Use it to compare, not to predict a stat line.

Freshmen get a different, honest treatment

Incoming freshmen have never taken a college snap, so there's no production to comp against. Their placement is built from recruiting pedigree with a light early-buzz overlay, and it's held in check by guardrails so hype can't float a kid who hasn't played to the top of the board over veterans who have produced.

Look, I'll say this plainly because it matters: no freshman placement is backtested. There are no NFL outcomes for players who haven't played a down. For those names, the eye test is the only real check that exists — and the board tells you so, every time, right on the surface.

Draft capital is predicted — never fed in

Plenty of "models" quietly ingest where the industry expects a player to get drafted, then act surprised when they agree with the mocks. This one doesn't. The model predicts draft capital as an output — from what the player's comparables actually did on draft day — and never consumes it as an input. NFL mock drafts never enter the model at all; at most they're sentiment.

Same principle for rankings: the board never ingests anybody's consensus rankings — including the ones it's trying to beat. Those are the scoreboard, not an ingredient. If they were an input, "where we disagree with the field" — the entire point of doing this — would be meaningless.

How I know it works

This is the part that separates a real model from a spreadsheet of opinions. Every scoring change is tested against a holdout of real historical players and what they actually became in the NFL. A change has to clear a pre-set bar on the harder of two independent splits of that history — not the easy one, the hard one — or it does not ship. No exceptions for a change I happen to like.

And that last part isn't a slogan. Look — the most trustworthy thing I can tell you about this model is a list of things I wanted to work and cut anyway when the holdout said no: high-school production, athletic testing, and a set of standalone efficiency adjustments all got tested and thrown out because they didn't hold up out of sample. A model that never kills its own darlings isn't being tested; it's being decorated.

Trust the tier before the rank

Every player lands in a tier, and each tier carries a backtested hit rate — the share of historical players in that band who went on to become real NFL contributors (5+ PPG). Against a base rate around 4.5%, the separation is steep and it holds up on both splits:

Hit rate = share of that band's historical players who reached 5+ NFL PPG. Base rate ≈ 4.5%.

When a player's tier and his numeric rank seem to disagree, trust the tier. The rank can get nudged by a weak positional anchor; the tier is the more stable read on the bet you're actually making.

Some positions are more predictable than others

The model is honest about where it's sharp and where it's guessing. Here's how much of each position's real NFL producers the top of the board actually catches:

That gap is the whole reason a 92-rated tight end and a 92-rated receiver are not the same bet. And it's why, at quarterback, you should lead with the model's predicted draft capital rather than the rating itself.
